Police planning to ban Orkut in India
According to media reports, the Pune police is in full swing to ban Orkut, the Google owned digital social networking tool following its controversial communities and its probable role in anti social activities.
To a certain extent, I feel that there is a ‘real’ need in maintaining Orkut. Given its liberal policies, a madman can create real mess on Orkut by creating hate topics, insultive discussions and also spoil images of well known personalities. Its sort of a free ground for cheap and unconstructive publicity. And after the recent blasts, things are turning pretty hot.
But is banning a solution to this problem?
Nope. Given Googles brand influence, I dont think it will be practically possible. Even if the police dont succumb to the influence of any media, there still will be a wide disarray among the ‘anti-social’ elements in the society. Only China is the state which officially monitors Google content. So much so the my blog – The First Tones of Freedom cannot be viewed on any Chinese ISP, sole reason being the word – Freedom, I preach about the importance of Freedom and Liberty in life..
Anyway – A middle path should be adopted and Orkut should make use of a better ‘Report as Bogus’ system. I mean its ridiculous the way things are handled as of now. Things will be clear in a few days.

This can’t be possible to ban orkut for such a stupid reason. Instead of doing it, pune police should contact orkut to remove such community from it rather than permanently baning the orkut.

Permanently banning orkut will not b a solution as so many other social networking sites like orkut are coming up…

Banning Orkut just because anti-social activities are being carried out is totally ridiculous. Why not our Govt rather ask Google to monitor the content being posted there?? If measures have to be taken so crud, then everything right from emails to blogs to chats must be closed!
That way our nation will be soon back to technology “zeroes” rather than the “zeroes and ones”! ORKUT SHOULD NOT BE BANNED!
Harshad Joshi 5:13 am on June 12, 2007 Permalink |
@Sandeep
I dont think that orkut will be banned throughout India, as its virtually impossible. Had we been living in China, where the government is very cruel, I guess this move would have given some results.
However, in many companies, the employees are not allowed to use Orkut and many private companies ban Orkut during office hours.
Sandeep Krishna 5:51 pm on June 12, 2007 Permalink |
I agree with you @ Harshad. It’s true about china, all web content is being monitored there! I also heard that compaies in India are doing that…
Anyways, I’m having my hands crossed…

banning of orkut is exposing the fact that police are still ineffcient to capture the cyber crimes.. people will portait the bads things only they never see good. personally speaking i contacted my school mates through orkut only. now it s ban in UAE also.
Harshad Joshi 3:25 pm on July 10, 2007 Permalink |
@Pramod
Theres a more efficient way to contact former school mates, just form one alumni student group, thats all, besides the school must be having some contact information of its former students, isent it?
Arshad 3:45 pm on July 10, 2007 Permalink |
I do admit with all the controversies posted. Hate groups are incresing rapidly and damanging social securities. Though I regularly visit orkut, I have a strong hatred, agony against it. I just go through it to check out what the new nonsense is created.
Pune Police pls go ahead, people like me are always with you in terminating such groups.

The motive is to gain the fabulous sensuous pleasures & Rewards ( 72 virgins & all luxuries etc for each ) promised for them & their families too in the KORAN. To know more about it refer to the celebrated PENGUIN translation of Koran by NJ Dawood, or any other version or refer to Google. See Chapters(Sura/Verses) 56/(12 to 40),55/( 54 to 56),55/ (72to-74), 76/ (12 to 22), .This is the easiest way for dropouts, drifters, idlers & terminally ill to pass off in great glory as Martyrs & also benefit their families who only rejoice & never grieve for their death . Now even educated youths are being brainwashed to be more religious & do their” duty” by using sophisticated methods like- food & gas poisoning, nuclear blasts, aircraft sabotage, ship attacks, car bombing etc. to gain these sensuous rewards in Paradise .Thus most of them are silent members of ‘SLEEPER CELLS ‘ ready to act on their own. All muslims are not Jihadis but ALL Jihadis have proved as muslims. Is this not true ? Worldwide publicity should be given for this despicable hidden motive & the Radical Fundamentalist leaders must be made to denounce & deny these acts & issue a FATWA warning that their families will be outcasted , deported & lynched. They will never do it –as they are a party to it & are actually rejoicing after the killings.—-Your comments please—

I don’t feel Orkut should be banned in a democratic country like India. Banning Orkut is not a permanent solution to this problem, as the controversial postings can be made through other social networking sites and blogs too. The only difference is that, Orkut is a bit more popular.
There should be an official government organization to keep track of the content being displayed in different websites. The general public should be able to contact this organization through digital means, probably through website and complain about the content in websites, anonymously. If this government body finds that the content is inappropriate, they should contact the website owners and demand to remove the content within a feasible deadline time. If its not removed even after this, then it is reasonable to consider banning as an option….

You should lodge a complaint against the profile by consulting the police cyber cell. Next time you are giving a real example of Orkut exploits, make sure that you dont give away personal details, so many people read the first tones of freedom, I cant say how many of them are crooked, its better we learn to protect ourself.
I think Orkut needs to be banned, atleast some communities and profiles definately..

All Orkut users
Beware, stay sharp, people are spying on you through Orkut medium, its highly unsafe place to distribute your personal information on Orkut.

Guys! Banning Orkut will not actually solve the problem. Yes of course it can solve problems on temporary basis. Ultimately education is something that can solve the problem.
People should attain maturity in things that they do. For which we need to be given the right education. Education does not start in schools or colleges, but starts at home. Parents should be paying attention to their children. Their activities need to be monitored and corrective measures should be taken.
This may sound like a long term project, however this can solve 99% of the problem.
Is Orkut a problem? or is it the people who are using it?
sudhanashu ryhal 7:11 am on October 22, 2007 Permalink |
Banning orkut doesnt solve this problem but instead of banning it, people who miss use it their accounts should be closed…… it really should not be banned because it is online community which makes meet ur friends which are or have gone away from us!!!!!!!!

banning anything will only boomarang. what is reqd. is to have a close monitoring so as to ensure that no anti-social element crop in the scrapbook and this can be done by google easily. when ther is a will there must be a way. go ahead!!!

Yahhhhhhh….Its better to bann a community like orkut at present..
Other wise there is one solution for this pblm is limit its features..
like 1.ban photos
2.dont allow to post scrap those who r not accepted friendship
3.not reveal the posted scraps to all so on

Hai i support it to be banned or esle i recommend google to make changes on their orkut project by providing individual security to every user .. this orkut project has lots of beneifts that one can find out anyone .. but as per human psychology is not correct one to be open always in virtual state .. great technology has been misued here .. many cases , many problems …in this project , everything is open …. theres no privacy at all .. so that any sort of problems may araise on every ones lives .. no doubt … i support it to be banned or altered by providing security to scarps and personnel informations …. Thanking u .. its my point of view …

many people misuse this facility and blackmail others by creating profiles derogatory to that person.

I think that Google now protects the Orkut profile by giving a privacy option. Those who wish to keep their pix open only for friends should try this facility provided.. 🙂

Orkut content needs to be moderated. Lot of objectionable material is being posted there and the site is patronized by the younger generation. Blatant exposure to such material can do more harm than good. Not only Police should take steps in this direction but even we as parents and social groups should take steps in this direction. Sooner the better it would be. Not only orkut but rediff qna is another site where lot of pornographic material is being posted. Issue should be taken up for this site as well.

There are some bad charecter people who are using orkut can do harm or hacking with other users account & profile because this is already happened with me. I am using orkut for the last two week but to my astonishment on yesterday dated 12 May, 2010 I found my own profile & name which I created in orkut has been missing & corrupted by another name of a girl along with a faceless photo of this girl.
