10 May 1857 – The first renaissance of Indian Freedom struggle

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of British East India Company‘s army on the 10th of May 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to the region of present-day Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northern Madhya Pradesh or Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Delhi, and Gurgaon.[2] The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region,[3] and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858.[2] The rebellion is also known as India’s First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, and the Sepoy Mutiny.

The rebels quickly captured large swaths of the Northwest Provinces and Oudh, including Delhi, where they installed the Mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar, as Emperor of Hindustan. The Company response came rapidly as well: by September 1857, with help from fresh British reinforcements, Delhi had been retaken.[2] Nevertheless, it then took the better part of 1858 for the rebellion to be completely suppressed in Oudh.[2]

Other regions of Company controlled India—Bengal province, the Bombay Presidency, and the Madras Presidency—remained largely calm.[2] In Punjab, only recently annexed by the East India Company, the Sikh princes supported the Company to provide both soldiers and support.[2] The large princely states, Hyderabad, Mysore, Travancore, and Kashmir, as well as the smaller ones of Rajputana, by not joining the rebellion, served, in the Governor-General Lord Canning‘s words, as “breakwaters in a storm” for the Company.[4]

In some regions, especially in Oudh, the rebellion took on the attributes of a patriotic revolt against European presence;[5] however, although the rebel leaders, especially the Rani of Jhansi, became folk heroes in the burgeoning nationalist movement in India half a century later,[2] they themselves “generated no coherent ideology or programme on which to build a new order.”[6] Still, the rebellion proved to be an important watershed in Indian history;[7] it led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858, and forced the British to reorganize the army, the financial system, and the administration in India.[8] India was thereafter governed directly from London—by the British government India Office and a cabinet level Secretary of State for India—in the new British Raj, a system of governance that lasted until 1947.[4]

My G/G/Grandmother witnessed, and survived to write a article on the first hours of the Indian Mutiny, on that terrible Sunday, 10th May 1857. G/G/Grandmother describes the bloody mayhem wrought by the Seepoys, and of the pathetic inactivity of the British Arrmy Commander to attempt to defend the residences.

On the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence of Indian people against colonial rule it is both relevant and necessary to discuss some aspects connected with the struggle. Despite their differences with each other, the common opinion of the parties of ruling classes is that the First War of Independence of 1857 reached its logical conclusion with the transfer of power in 1947 (which they hold to be “independence”.) Here they conveniently ignore that in 1947 the British colonial rulers transferred power to those very classes who had sided with the colonial aggressors in the War of independence of 1857-59 or those the colonial rulers had nurtured after crushing the peoples revolt. In a sense the transfer of power of 1947 was not the completion of the War of Independence of 1857 but the continuing in modified form of the colonial rule victorious in the war of 1857-59. The independence struggle of the people continues even now in today’s concrete conditions.

At the root of the understanding of the ruling class parties, supported and nourished as they are by imperialism, is their evaluation of the character of colonial rule. The praises showered on colonial rule by Manmohan Singh is in accordance with this evaluation. Yes, this much is there that the politicians of ruling classes used to avoid openly praising their masters as shamelessly as he did.

The question in context of the War of 1857-59 is whether the British colonial rulers were destroying feudalism in India and thus the War of 1857 was merely a feudal reaction against this. The basic question in relation to the above understanding is whether there were no processes of democratization in Indian society? Did the colonial rule, despite all its atrocities and destruction, democratize Indian society? With this outlook, the War of 1857-59 becomes a reactionary campaign, not a war of independence. This understanding takes colonial rule to be a synonym of destroying feudalism and building capitalism in India. It is another matter that the task of democratic revolution is not over even after 150 years of 1857, and the task of democratization of society is still on the agenda. In short, the issue is, with the victory of which forces in the war of 1857-59 was the task of democratic transformation in India associated?

Was the British colonial rule in India really a campaign to establish capitalism after destroying feudalism? When the colonial rule actually began in the first half of the 18th century, India was a feudal society pregnant with capitalist forces. Spinning and weaving was the occupation second to farming in which people found employment in large numbers. The muslin of Dacca was renowned throughout the world. Cottage industry was widespread on a countrywide scale and many people depended on it for a livelihood. Mineral resources were also used according to the needs of the society.

The British destroyed native industry completely. This was necessary to ensure use in India of mill products from Britain. With the start of British colonial rule the use in India of British goods increased very fast and many figures are available to show this. Textile industry in India was completely destroyed and this was not only due to competition between goods but was done through barbaric repression and atrocities whose hair-raising accounts are available in large numbers. In Capital, Marx had termed the uprooting of weavers in India the biggest human tradegy till that time. Weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths and other artisans became victims of unemployment on a large scale. In the proclamation on 25th August 1857 of Mughal prince Firoz Shah the state of artisans is mentioned and it is furthur stated that the entry of English goods snatched the livelihood of spinners, weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths, shoemakers etc. and made the artisans beggars in every way. The inflow of English goods into India finished off all possibilities of capitalist development in place of capitalist development of the country. Even today the ruling classes of India are showing a mirage of development leaning on imperialist capital. Actually by destroying the capitalist forces with which feudal India was pregnant the British did not ‘democratize’ India but rather tried to finish off any possibilities of this. By finishing off the industries of India the colonial rulers spread the use of industrial goods from British mills. In this way they prepared an economic basis for an alliance with feudalism.

The British colonial rule is synonymous with the cruelest loot. The British rulers looted the then rulers of the country as well the people and carried away all the resources to Britain. The British colonial rulers showed the way of capitalist development in Britain by leaving India penniless and of making Britain the biggest power of the world of that time.

The colonial rule targeted for plunder not feudalism but the whole agricultural system of India. The tax on land was significantly raised and peasants were dispossessed in the event of non-payment. The economic burden on both peasants and landlords was increased so much in order to intensify loot that large tracts of land became barren. According to SB. Chowdhry “heavy rent increased taxes and made the peasants destitute. In many parts of the country rent was settled at very high rates.” At the same time there were rent free areas in the country on a large scale. All rent free areas were declared ended and a period of terror against them was launched. Each piece of land was brought into the tax nexus. In order to increase its income the Company also used the method of direct extraction from peasants but altogether burden of tax and rent on the peasantry increased. The echo of the exploitation of the peasantry on such a large scale was heard even in England when Disraeli commented on it in a parliamentary debate. The British L.L.S. Omelie wrote referring to a report “I can challenge that one third of land in company ruled areas of India has become a jungle in which only wild animals live”.

By auctioning the possession of farmers and landlords who did not pay the high rents to the colonial rulers a web of usury capital was laid out in the country. In the struggle of 1857-59 these too were attached in many places. Altogether colonial rule made agriculture a special target of its exploitation due to which the situation of the peasantry become quite pitiable. This was an attack not on feudalism but on Indian agriculture and its aim was to intensify colonial loot of the country.

Historians and writers have collected many examples of the impoverishment of the people of India by this destruction of Indian industry and by especially targeting agriculture for exploitation. Macaullay’s own admission is in these words, “Delicate women, who had never ventured out of their homes and never seen the sun, touched the feet of passerbys, spread their hands and begged for a fistful of rice Scores of corpses of the hungry were swept in the Hoogly river past the mansions and gardens of the British to disappear into the sea.”

Renowned poet Ashraf Ali Khan ‘Fuga’ described the impoverishment of the people of the country in words which captured the piteous condition of the people. Marx has mentioned the destructive effects and the regeneration in the context of colonial rule in India. The British colonial rulers gave full effect to the destruction of the country. Of the other aspect Marx said “The Indians will not reap the fruits of new elements of society” till “in Great Britain itself the now ruling classes shall have been supplanted by the industrial proletariat” or till they “themselves shall have grown strong enough to throw off the English yoke all together. Marx said the situation of the Indian people was one of losing an old world and not getting a new one. The sympathy of Marx and Engles was with the war of independence of 1857-59 because only by “fully overthrowing the yoke” of British colonialists did they see the road for the regeneration of India.

The widespread participation of the people in the war of independence of 1857-59 can be easily understood in the context of their impoverishment by colonial rule. However in this the role of the peasantry and the peasant in uniforms (sepoys) was main. Despite this the intellectuals of the ruling classes of India either opposed this or understood it mainly as a revolt of feudals. Bankimhandra Chatterjee, Ram Mohan Roy, Sir Syed Ahmed openly criticized the war. Savarkar did call it the war of independence of India but mainly described the role of feudal rulers in it. Jawaharlal Nehru wrote, “Essentially, the revolt was a feudal outburst headed by feudal chiefs and their followers and aided by the widespread anti foreign sentiment.” (The Discovery of India)

Here it is important to state that not only was there no feudal king at war with the British at the start of the war, but rather it is only because of the support of the feudal kings that British could maintain their rule over India. Scandia, Holkar, Thzam, Nawab of Rampur, Begums of Bhopal, Maharaja of Patiala, the Ranas of Nepal and many feudals stood with the British and the war of independence of 1857 had divided the feudal forces. A big section was with the British while the feudals opposing colonial rule jumped into the war. The war of independence of 1857-59 was fought between the British colonialists and their supporters on one hand and the people of India including some feudals on the other. Those who refute war of independence by showing the handful of participating feudals should remember : “The first blow dealt to the French monarchy proceeded from the nobility, not from the peasants.” (Karl Marx, On Colonialism)

The main force of the war of independence of 1857-59 was the peasantry and the war extended against the pro English feudals also. However, it was not an anti-feudal peasant war but a war against colonial rule. In this context the comment of some writers are guilty of exaggeration. Even so, the support extended by major part of the feudals to the British exposes this false propaganda that this was a mere revolt by feudal forces.

The war of independence declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as the Emperor of India but the aim of the war was neither to restore the old Mughal Sultanate, and nor did the circumstances to do so exist. In this context a reference to the letter written by Bahadur Shah Zafar to several kings is relevant: “It is my fervent desire that the foreigners should be thrown out of India using all means and at any cost. It is also my fervent desire that the whole of India should be freed from the foreigners. After throwing out the British from India I have no desire to rule for my own importance. If all you native rulers are ready to take up arms to throw out the enemy I am ready to give up my kingly powers to any elected group of native kings”.

The most important issue in context to the war of independence of 1857-59 is its evaluation in view of social progress. Colonial rule which crushed living forces of Indian society could not be the harbinger of regeneration of India. Colonial rule along with feudal forces destroyed both, the industries and capitalism developing in feudal society and pushed the peasantry into a cycle of prolonged exploitation and backwardness. The main burden of the failure of the war of independence of 1857-59 fell on the peasantry and on artisans. Colonial rule tightened its collaboration with feudals because this was the reactionary section which could be of assistance in Colonial loot and plunder, could become the social base of colonialism and was incapable of existing independently from colonial rule. The social progress of India was only possible by uprooting the colonial rule along with its supporters.

Comprador capitalists and feudals in the twentieth century made use of the anti colonial struggle to extract concessions from colonial rulers. After the weakening of imperialism following 2nd world war and in the context of the world wide intensification of anti colonial struggles, the comprador capitalists and feudals betrayed the independence struggle and reached an agreement for transfer of power with British imperialism. With this India changed to a semi colony from a colony and the alliance of imperialism – comprador bureaucrat capitalism – feudalism began exploitation and plunder of people of the country. The aim of democratic revolution in India was to uproot imperialism and its compradors but in 1947 the comprador classes reached an agreement with imperialism and foiled this struggle.

Today too the exploitation and plunder of India by the alliance of imperialism – comprador bureaucrat capitalism and feudalism is continuing. The people of India are writhing under the loot of imperialist exploitation and feudal loot. The natural resources and labour of India are being exploited for the benefit of multinational companies of imperialist countries and comprador big corporates. The major part of the people of the country are victims of extreme poverty, impoverishment and backwardness. It is only by uprooting the ruling classes that this situation can be got rid off. That is, only by new democratic revolution in the country can a new India be built. Even today the enemies of revolution in our country are imperialism and its compradors.

This is the relevance of the war of independence of 1857. The freedom struggle of 1857 is incomplete even today and can be completed only by agrarian revolution under the leadership of the working class.

A practical approach for blocking Orkut and saving trouble

From the past few days theIndian media is in all sorts of frenzy, displaying the news and reports telling that Indian government has instructed CERT India to ‘ban’ Orkut access primarily because,

    1. Indian authorities believe that Orkut allowes creation of flame communities that pack enough ammunation to set cities on fire and a punch that hurts the fragile ego of icon worshippers.

    2. Orkut is a place where loners waste their bandwidth hunting for girls, their personal details, a photograph or pieces of vital info.

    3. Orkuts a facinating place where you can abuse anyone, yes anyone, ranging from George Dubya Bush to the local administration without the fear of getting in line of fire. Although too much abusing or ranting can lead to your profile or community being marked as fake. But why bother , you can create plenty of fake accounts.

    4. Orkut is also a place where one can secretly plan their next rave party without the cops noticing it.

Actually, I am not sure that this is what the government or authorities think of, but these all activites are being carried out on Orkut. No doubt about it. And I also know that the democratic government of India will try as little as possible to ‘ban’ it, afterall, the govt has so many daunting tasks ahead of them, be it the election of new president after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the Chinese theat claims over Arunachal Pradesh, the rising value of ruppee against the US dollor(Huh, isent this thing funny? The rise of ruppee against dollor is extremely conducive to the booming Indian economy, but is a warning bell for the cheap service industry that is the home of US BPOs etc. Strange ways of economy. What to lose and what to keep?)

On top of it, people get mad each time they discover that Orkut is being misused by sadistic outfits for achieving their targets. Orkut certainly gives a nice facility to create various groups and read a wide audience, but is it vitally necessary to get involved in Orkut to a level where we find it difficult to communication without the digital network? I mean the analog social network, the real one is much more good option.

Some reasons for Orkuts wide misuse

    1. It allows creation of fake profiles and hate communities. Although theres provision for reporting it as bogus, the procedure isent foolproof. It can work either ways. Using this facility, someone can report a persons profile as bogus, even though that individual may be posting the truth. Who is to decide that the validity and quality of contents posted are in interest of community or no? Tough job, AI hasent reached this height as of now.

    2. People have to learn to exist in digital world. Even if the digital world is limited to a few dark servers placed on unknown datacenters, the impact they cause on real lifes can be damaging. It cannot be blamed on any digital network. People carry their personality, their good, bad attributes, imperfections, ideologies where ever they go. When this happens, usually theres trouble, leading to unstability.

Inspite of everything, Orkut wont be ‘banned’, no one except the Chinese govt has the courage to ‘ban’ Google, but I still think that Orkut needs to be ‘blocked’ in offices, corporations, at place of work, school, colleges, government sections, public places etc. Doing this will be more feasible. Majority of well known companies block access to Orkut site, the reason is very simple – Dont want to distract the employees attention from work, and dont want to get into any legal trouble because of any employees miscreant activies.

In schools and colleges, we go to study and not surf the web. Its common sense. We dont want to expose students to ill effects of bad company.

So, that leaves us to homes. Yes, at home, we are free to do  anything. Access Orkut from your home.

Moral of the story – Orkut cannot be ‘banned’ in India but it certainly can be ‘blocked’ by using proxy servers. Any digital social network can be a great tool to explore the world around us, but till the time we dont find a common unified way of understanding the ‘real’ world, we might face these problems forever.

And as usual, as far as I am concerned, I personally feel that there are lot of other problems in this world that need a top priority attention example – Global Warming, Rise of terrorist outfits etc. It makes little sense to quarrel and argue over a damm freaky Orkut.

Police planning to ban Orkut in India

According to media reports, the Pune police is in full swing to ban Orkut, the Google owned digital social networking tool following its controversial communities and its probable role in anti social activities.

To a certain extent, I feel that there is a ‘real’ need in maintaining Orkut. Given its liberal policies, a madman can create real mess on Orkut by creating hate topics, insultive discussions and also spoil images of well known personalities. Its sort of a free ground for cheap and unconstructive publicity. And after the recent blasts, things are turning pretty hot.

But is banning a solution to this problem?

Nope. Given Googles brand influence, I dont think it will be practically possible. Even if the police dont succumb to the influence of any media, there still will be a wide disarray among the ‘anti-social’ elements in the society. Only China is the state which officially monitors Google content. So much so the my blog – The First Tones of Freedom cannot be viewed on any Chinese ISP, sole reason being the word – Freedom, I preach about the importance of Freedom and Liberty in life..

Anyway – A middle path should be adopted and Orkut should make use of a better ‘Report as Bogus’ system. I mean its ridiculous the way things are handled as of now. Things will be clear in a few days.

Banning Orkut just because anti-social activities are being carried out is totally ridiculous. Why not our Govt rather ask Google to monitor the content being posted there?? If measures have to be taken so crud, then everything right from emails to blogs to chats must be closed!

That way our nation will be soon back to technology “zeroes” rather than the “zeroes and ones”! ORKUT SHOULD NOT BE BANNED!

I dont think that orkut will be banned throughout India, as its virtually impossible. Had we been living in China, where the government is very cruel, I guess this move would have given some results.

However, in many companies, the employees are not allowed to use Orkut and many private companies ban Orkut during office hours.

The motive is to gain the fabulous sensuous pleasures & Rewards ( 72 virgins & all luxuries etc for each ) promised for them & their families too in the KORAN. To know more about it refer to the celebrated PENGUIN translation of Koran by NJ Dawood, or any other version or refer to Google. See Chapters(Sura/Verses) 56/(12 to 40),55/( 54 to 56),55/ (72to-74), 76/ (12 to 22), .This is the easiest way for dropouts, drifters, idlers & terminally ill to pass off in great glory as Martyrs & also benefit their families who only rejoice & never grieve for their death . Now even educated youths are being brainwashed to be more religious & do their” duty” by using sophisticated methods like- food & gas poisoning, nuclear blasts, aircraft sabotage, ship attacks, car bombing etc. to gain these sensuous rewards in Paradise .Thus most of them are silent members of ‘SLEEPER CELLS ‘ ready to act on their own. All muslims are not Jihadis but ALL Jihadis have proved as muslims. Is this not true ? Worldwide publicity should be given for this despicable hidden motive & the Radical Fundamentalist leaders must be made to denounce & deny these acts & issue a FATWA warning that their families will be outcasted , deported & lynched. They will never do it –as they are a party to it & are actually rejoicing after the killings.—-Your comments please—

I don’t feel Orkut should be banned in a democratic country like India. Banning Orkut is not a permanent solution to this problem, as the controversial postings can be made through other social networking sites and blogs too. The only difference is that, Orkut is a bit more popular.

There should be an official government organization to keep track of the content being displayed in different websites. The general public should be able to contact this organization through digital means, probably through website and complain about the content in websites, anonymously. If this government body finds that the content is inappropriate, they should contact the website owners and demand to remove the content within a feasible deadline time. If its not removed even after this, then it is reasonable to consider banning as an option….

You should lodge a complaint against the profile by consulting the police cyber cell. Next time you are giving a real example of Orkut exploits, make sure that you dont give away personal details, so many people read the first tones of freedom, I cant say how many of them are crooked, its better we learn to protect ourself.

I think Orkut needs to be banned, atleast some communities and profiles definately..

Guys! Banning Orkut will not actually solve the problem. Yes of course it can solve problems on temporary basis. Ultimately education is something that can solve the problem.

People should attain maturity in things that they do. For which we need to be given the right education. Education does not start in schools or colleges, but starts at home. Parents should be paying attention to their children. Their activities need to be monitored and corrective measures should be taken.

This may sound like a long term project, however this can solve 99% of the problem.

Is Orkut a problem? or is it the people who are using it?

Thanking u .. its my point of view …

If all that Google would do is to enable privacy for everything, then I guess that move will spoil the entire concept of digital socializing, which in any case is a crap according to me.

Blatant exposure to such material can do more harm than good. Not only Police should take steps in this direction but even we as parents and social groups should take steps in this direction. Sooner the better it would be. Not only orkut but rediff qna is another site where lot of pornographic material is being posted. Issue should be taken up for this site as well.

I am using orkut for the last two week but to my astonishment on yesterday dated 12 May, 2010 I found my own profile & name which I created in orkut has been missing & corrupted by another name of a girl along with a faceless photo of this girl. Happy Birthday Orkut

    Orkuts third birthday

    Today is Orkuts 3rd birthday.

    The Beginning
Orkut was quietly launched on January 30, 2004 by Google, the search engine company.
Orkut Büyükkökten, a Turkish software engineer, developed it as an independent project while working at Google (required by its policy). Some discomfort with this exists among users and potential users of orkut, especially since Google’s other noteworthy product of 2004, the Web-based email client Gmail, had servers scan emails for keywords in order to deliver advertisements targeted at them, which sparked an idea that Google was “reading your email”.

While previously working for Affinity Engines, he had developed a similar system, InCircle, intended for use by university alumni groups. In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Büyükkökten and Google based orkut on inCircle code. The allegation is based on the presence of 9 identical bugs in orkut that also exist in InCircle. Originally, the orkut community was felt to be elite, because its membership is by invitation only. However, at the end of July 2004 orkut surpassed the 1,000,000 member mark, and at the end of September it surpassed the 2,000,000 mark.

While the intended invitation method was e-mail between two acquaintances, invitations to orkut are obtainable via the web with a bit of diligence or eBay, just like Gmail invites.
Orkut’s use as a social tool is complex, because various people frequently try to add strangers to their own pool of friends, more often than not just to increase the number indicating their number of friends next to their name in their profile. Many “add-me” communities exist, solely for this purpose. A large number of bogus, cloned, fake, invisible and “orphaned” profiles also exist.
    As of today; there are
    41,282,563 users on orkut.

    Speed and reliability
Orkut often is unavailable, producing a “Bad, bad server. ” error message — behavior consistent with that of an underpowered server under heavy load. The outages tend to occur during the day hours in the Americas, home of more than 80% of orkut users.

    Iranian censorship
Orkut was very popular in Iran, but the website is blocked by the government. As they say, this is due to national security issues, as orkut users have the ability to spread messages rapidly, but the government says it’s due to Islamic ethical issues about dating and match making. To get around this block, sites such as “orkutproxy.xom” (now defunct) were made for Iranian users. Other websites such as Groups likw Yahoo, Google have communities dedicated to receiving updates on the newest location of Iran’s orkut proxy. Though it was once possible to bypass governmental blockage of orkut, the site has closed its HTTPS pages on all anonymous proxies. Now it is almost impossible for ordinary users to visit this site inside Iran.

In August 2006 UAE followed the footsteps of Iran in blocking the site.

    Demographics of orkut
The latest information can be obtained from here.

Some prominent controversies faced by Orkut in these 3 years.

    1. Recently an Indian girl had filed a complaint against a boy who put up her fake profile along with abuses and profanities. But now its gone a step above a notice was issued by the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court to Google’s social networking site Orkut, for spreading “hatred against India.” The Court responded to a public interest litigation (PIL) that took exception to a “We hate India’ community in Orkut. The community, set up by a *Russian, Miraslov Stankovic, states that it is against all those people who are against Pakistan. The community is about having a group of people who have enmity against India because of its oppressive and hostile approach, it says in the description of the community. The number of members of the community as on Thursday was 91, down from 100 the previous day.

    2. A case has been filed against ‘Orkut’ website at Pune for deplorable denigration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Lord Rama. An assurance was given by the police to investigate the matter. The case has been filed under article 67 of Information Technology Act and article 505 of Indian Penal Code.

Actually, whatever may be the problems, its certain now that social networking groups have a long way to go. Lets wish Orkut a happy birthday and hope that it maintains a clean environment.

A very popular story about Orkut Büyükkökten is circulated on Orkut social networking site through mails and scraps. Its something like the follows

A guy lost his girlfriend in a train accident, but the gal’s name nowhere appeared in the dead list. This guy grew up n became IT technical architect in his late 20?s, achievement in itself!!He hired developers from the whole globe and plan to make a software where he could search for his gf through the web.Things went as planned n he found her, after losing millions of dollars and 3 long years!!

It was time to shut down the search operation, when the CEO of Google had a word with this guy n took over this application. This Software made a whopping 1 billion dollars profit in its first year, which we today know as ORKUT.

The guy’s name is ORKUT BUYUKKOTEN.Yes its named after him only.Today he is paid a hefty sum by Google for the things we do like scrapping. He is expected to b the richest person by 2009.ORKUT BUYUKKOTEN today has 13 assistants to monitor his scrapbook & 8 to monitor his friends-list. He gets around 20,000 friend-requests a day & about 85,000 scraps!!!

Some more cool facts about him

He gets $12 from Google when every person registers to this website.

    • He also gets $10 when you add somebody as a friend.
    • He gets $8 when your friend’s friend adds you as a friend & gets $6 if

anybody adds you as friend in the resulting chain.

    • He gets $5 when you scrap somebody & $4 when somebody scraps you.
    • He also gets $200 for each photograph you upload on Orkut.
    • He gets $2.5 when you add your friend in the crush-list or in the hot-list.
    • He gets $2 when you become somebody’s fan.
    • He gets $1.5 when somebody else becomes your fan.
    • He even gets $1 every time you logout of Orkut.
    • He gets $0.5 every time you just change your profile-photograph.
    • He also gets $0.5 every time you read your friend’s scrap-book & $0.5 every time

    you view your friend’s friend-list.

    “Moral of the story”?

I dont know if its real or unreal, its very much of a bollywood type thing. Who knows?? 😛

Dont believe me?? Well..you can take a look at Orkut Büyükkökten  (Orkuts) official profile on Orkut.. 😀

Here is a list of Orkut Büyükkökten s research papers

Dont get sade if you are not able to make any sense out of any of this material. I tell ye – You are not alone.. 😛

    • Not sure of origins. Information based on the profile.

Bush goes ballistic about other countries being evil and dangerous, because they have weapons of mass destruction. But, he insists on building up even a more deadly supply of nuclear arms right here in the US. What do you think? Is killing thousands of innocent civilians okay when you are doing a little government makeover?
What happened to us, people? When did we become such lemmings?
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!

    Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa

Shrimanta Bajirao Peshwa, the man who never lost a battle.

Shrimant Baji Rao Vishwanath Bhatt (August 18, 1699- April 25, 1740), also known as Baji Rao I, was a noted general who served as Peshwa (Prime Minister) to the fourth Maratha Chhatrapati (King) Shahu between 1719 until Baji Rao’s death. He is also known as Thorala (Marathi for Elder) Baji Rao.

Baji Rao was the son of the first Bhatt family Peshwa – Balaji Vishwanath. At the tender age of 17,he was appointed by Shahu as Peshwa upon the death of his father, keeping aside all other claimants. Thus making the position of Peshwa hereditary in the Bhatt family. It is quite clear from this appointement that Shahu recognised the talent of this boy and reared him as peshwa.Bajirao was well trained by the maratha cavalry generals who have distinguished in the war of 27 years.Perhaps his early association with these maratha cavalry made him a part and parcel of them.Like Shivaji or Dhanaji Jadhav, Bajirao was popular with his soldiers and even today his name is a honorable one in countryside.

    • Baji Rao, who fought over 36 battles, is reputed to have never lost one.
    • He was one of the first to understand and exploit the fragmenting Mughal Empire, following the footsteps of his father. The declining influence of the Sayyid brothers at the Imperial court was another factor influencing his decision to attack.
    • The later Kingdoms of Scindias (Ranoji) of Gwalior, Holkars (Malharrao) of Indore, Gaekwads (Pilaji) of Baroda, and Pawars (Udaiji) of Dhar were Baji Rao’s creation of a Maratha confederacy as he wreaked havoc on the disintegrating Mughal Empire and set up his jahagirdars (governors).
    • He moved the administrative capital of the Maratha Empire from Satara to the new city of Pune in 1728 with permission of his master. His general, Bapuji Shripat persuaded some of the richer families of Satara to settle in the new city, which was divided into 18 peths (boroughs).

    His famous quotes are –
“Remember that night has nothing to do with sleep. It was created by God, to raid territory held by your enemy. The night is your shield, your screen against the cannons and swords of vastly superior enemy forces.”

i am a south indian brahmana who has the highest respect for the people of maharashtra and their culture. It seems to me ,as to many others,to be the best synthesis so far achieved of the “aryan” and southern cultures of our land.

maharashtrians have an essential earthiness and simplicity reinforced by a basic honesty and goodness. Also by wholeheartedly accepting sanskrit, they have access to the riches of the great language.Only in marathi is there a faithful commentary of the “Bhagavad Gita” by the great saint Jnanadeva.

Maharashtra can legitimately be proud of Shivaji Maharaj,Phule,Dr. Ambedkar,Gokhale,Tilak,Bhandarkar and others.particularly the valiant fight against mughals and social reform in the modern age.

But how can non maharashtrians ,paricularly those in areas conquered by marathas, have any emotional attachment to rule essentially by one linguistic group?

many maharashtrians, particularly in pune, seem to miss the difference between hindu and maratha rule.

marathas were and are hindus.maratha rule was hindu rule.but it belongs to the past.we should draw inspiration from it.but today we are governed by different values.your post can be misunderstood.

Hi.. there is no doubt about that.. she was his second wife.. the Maharaja of Bundelkhand’s daughter.. they got married when Bajirao saved Bundelkhand from the Mughal’s.. it has been wrongly believed for many years that she was his mistress.. careful what you read/believe.. some novels may provide the wrong or somewhat altered information depending on the plot… Good that you’re atleast confirming..

Dear Mr Kulkarni

Thank you for taking time to share – much appreciated.

I have recently asked a friend to recommend books on Bajirao and Nana Phadvanis. Perhaps you would recommend an honest, objective and gutsy accounts on both rather than glossy, bollywood inspired timid fiction?

If you go in depth of the character of this great personality and what he achieved for the hindu revival, after Shivaji, your head will bow for ever when you will hear his name anywhere. Even the noted sceptic Grant Duff literally pays homage to this most outstanding peronality. I have had the privelige to visit his samadhi at Raverkhedi for which I had to cross river Narmada twice and also walk on foot to cross an island as I had gone in the wrong direction. I do not know swimming and in sheer enthusiasm I travelled in a boat used to carry sand from maa Narmada. The feeling that I gained here equals that when I first visited Pandharpur. I am trying to collect the literature on Shrimant and plan to do some work on him. Though I am in Dubai, I still carry with me Grant Duff’s three volumes. I have not succeeded in getting the Sardesai’s work and would request anyone to help me. Also I request if some one could provide me more literature on Shrimant Baji Rao. Friends, one of the reasons of Nadir Shah running away was our brave Baji Rao. Unfortunately this is not highlighted in the history books that we come across.

Yes, its true that in upcoming Narmada Sardar Sarovar project, the samadhi of Bajirao Peshwa might get affected due to backwaters, and its sade to find that not enough people are voicing against this, very few people acknowldge Bajirao Peshwas great role in Indian history… 😦

I am fan of this great personality. Baji Rao I was ambitious soldier who expanded martha state in north India.

The Marathi historical novel “Rau” (1972) by historical novelist N. S. Inamdar also deals with the story of Bajirao and Mastani and the later part of Bajirao’s life. It also tells of the Peshwa’s relations with his mother Radhabai, his wife Kashibai, his son Nana Saheb (later Balaji Baji Rao) and his sickly but brilliant brother Chimaji Appa.

A History of Marathas – By Grantt Duff (Online book which mentions history from Shahaji Bhonsle till end of Peshwa regime.)

I don’t think so because Mastani never interferd in his pearsonal life.Though she had son from him she never told him to give peshwa post to their son.She was having true love for Bajirao.Mastani was one small part of his life.We should focus on other parts of his life.

As I am not a historian, I cant say that Bajirao Peshwa was entirely right or entirely wrong.

However, many influential people of Pune at that time used to condemn him for liking Mastani. Maybe they were old fashioned.

Todays people are more broadminded, they dont really care about such issues. Or atleast many dont show it too much in public.

However, we can say that many people then didnt had a beautiful wife like Mastani and so they were jealous of Bajirao.

i am very much intrested in bajirao peshawa’s achivements .
I think the maratha raj was nearly ended when mughals realeased Shahu & Maratha raj divided in Kolhapur & Satara. Shahu was not a Warrior & Kolhapur not having any influancial sardars & again a fight for kolhapur raj between rajaram’s wives there wasnt anyone to save the maratha raj but for Bajirao 1 it became the most powerful kingdom in Hindusthan .

As for indian Historians they did not give the due credit to him.
But the Outsiders knows exactely his worth.& that is why this campaign has been chosen as brilliant in strategy (”A masterpiece of strategic mobility…“) by Field Marshal Montgomery in his book, A History of Warfare.

As for Mastani — This was a very small period in Bajirao’s life But given to much importance.
Bajirao’s wife Kashi was having problem of Arthritis. She used to drag her feet.Though Bajirao take care of her .
At that time it was normal to have more than one wife.
To keep another woman from different casts also.
Bajirao’s father also have another woman from differant cast.
But there was opposition for half muslim wife .
but no one seems to see the politics of Bajirao & Chhatrasal which was a very needed thing at that time.

i have collected & collecting good information on The Grate Bajirao if anyone intrested to provide more i will be grateful .

Dear Harshad , You have done a lot of research on Bajirao Peshwa and compiled a lot of useful information . However the photo you have displayed is that of Tipu Sultan . The facial features of Bajirao were quite distinct and different . I have seen this error at some other places on the internet too . I watched a powerpoint presentation on the Maratha time forts . The presenter there too presented this picture as the picture o Bajirao . I am a researcher in matters of Ancient Wisdom and I see these kind of errors happening all along . . As Internet is largely cut and paste medium , this kind of misinformation can go quite far . Thanks in advance. Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information .
