Apple iPhone is todays equivalent example of Sony Walkman of yesterday. Theres no path breaking features that it offers, but apparantly, its PDA and smartphone capabilities(alongwith very good marketting) can help Apple to reach a wide customer base and also it will give comman non technical consumers the chance to learn the Apple way of design and operation. As it is many people just drool over the lean mean Mac, its time to have one in pocket and let the world drool. I would personally take it as a PDA device with the capacities of the Mac OS. Now-a-days many PDA have a crossover as a mobile device and a PDA or a portable handheld. It would have been much better had Mr Jobs introduced it as a iPod+PDA and not a smartphone+PDA..
As far as Indian market is concerned, I think that people will literally do anything to get this fabulous PDA. Reasons of it not used as a smartphone are
1. India dosent have an EDGE capable network as of 11 jan 07.(If theres any, please market yourself more guys. I think former BPL had this, but not clear about it) GPRS is present, but the operators charge it like hell, and a its an example of a paradox that BSNL broadband is much cheaper and affordable then the GPRS provided by blokes like Airtel, Hutch, !dea and the CDMA players like Reliance and Tata Indicom.
2. 3G is absent. My motorazr can take a 2.5G and 3G, but as of now, I dont think that any provider has this facility.
3. Nokia already dominates the hi-end market in India, but it never markets its any smartphone as a PDA. Nor does it offer any features as compared to the iPhone, although their N-series has got some serious multimedia features. Theres pretty tough competition for survival.
The asian market is full of varied diversities. Japan has got its own NTT DoCoMo, India has got WLL, CDMA, GSM, and all are incompaitable with each other. I hope that by the time iPhone reaches Asian market, the final picture will become much clear, and hopefully, the Apple iPhone will give Apple and consumers a great functionality.

Rejoice, the Apple iPhone to cost Rs 31000/- for 8 GB model and Rs 36000/- for the 16 CG model. Add to it the absence of 3G in India. Enjoy..
Thanks for the info., it’s wait and watch ultimately for us…
well if you think about it dis way……a brilliant video mp3 player with an amazing touchscreen pda features…u will be enticed to buy it
Airtel already offers GPRS with EDGE in all major cities – though it doesn’t do much publicity about it.
All leading service providers provide GPRS with EDGE connectivity. No wonder that since 2005, most of the phones launched in India already feature EDGE capability. The service has been around for a long time now.
In Mumbai, players providing EDGE networks are Hutch, BPL and Airtel.
can u guys tell me from where can i buy an iphone???
When would the i-phone launch in India
True, they are EDGE networks. But they are only local EDGE networks. Just like the pseudo-broadband service we get in INDIA, the EDGE networks are not really EDGE. It’s Indian-EDGE. Worse but good enough for people who don’t know what speeds should be
Is iphone available in india now? I wanted to know if the only way to order it is through the net or it’s hit the indian markets? How much would it cost approximately?
joe
Really like the info, thanks.

The moment you have been waiting for is here. The new iPhone 3G premieres August 22, 2008 in India. iPhone 3G will be available in 2 exciting options:
1.8 GB (Black) for Rs 31000
2.16GB (White & Black) for Rs 36100
Hi Guys,
If the price is 31000 and 36000 for 8GB and 16GB respectively, then i am damn sure it will be a flop show for Steve Jobs in indian market.
People in india are not much aware of the latest technology what US people are crazy about, we need a phone with good qulity.. since I phone has got good features like Ipod, multi finger touch.. people are much satisfied with this..
So what i suggest is, give us the basic phone with Ipod and multi touch technology, we do not need the internet device.. we have got so many cyber cafe around to browse.. so if price is 12000 to 16000 deffenetly it will be a good show for Apple in india.
All the best for Apple..
