Google AJAX Search API (Beta)

Posted by: Harshad Joshi on: October 4, 2006

Each time I used to log in my Google personalized page, I just couldent used to stop me from wondering – ‘Can I add these rich apps on my blogs too??’

The Google AJAX Search API is designed to make it easier for webmasters and developers to do two things:

  1. Add a dynamic search box to your site that includes Google Web, Video, News, Maps, and Blog search results.
  2. Build powerful web apps on top of Google search.

The Google AJAX Search API provides simple web objects that perform inline searches over a number of Google services (Web Search, Local Search, Video Search, Blog Search, and News Search). If your web page is designed to help users create content (e.g. message boards, blogs, etc.), the API is designed to support these activities by allowing them to copy search results directly into their messages.

Long live Web 2.0

;-D

There are several reasons for Google to make use of AJAX apps.

1. AJAX apps are very useful in distributed computer systems, where local environment differs from every device. No need of an extra plugin. All programs are run within the browser itself. It adds to some extra security(sort of..)
2. Its very easy to write completely functional apps with local enhancements that can run easyly on demand.

3. The execution and response time of these AJAX apps is very less, thus enhancing productivity.

4. Even though J2EE is also a close competitor in this field, normal Javascript is comparatively more easy to learn and program.

5. And finally, people like apps that are fast, attractive and work without major trouble and headache.  Not many people like to install a Java/Macromedia plugin. This does count at the end of the day.

Thus this is the small step towards Google OS.

Wait and watch..more will follow shortly.

This is just the latest in a series of innovations from Google (refer my post http://technikhil.wordpress.com/2006/07/16/googlenaut-the-online-blitzkrieg/)
It has really shaken up the internet as we know it pioneering most of the hip online technologies like AJAX and Mashups.
Yahoo is doing a pretty good job catching up though (http://technikhil.wordpress.com/2006/10/05/yahoos-web-20-makeover/) . It is interesting to see the oneupmanship that these companies do to each other…

@technikhil

Yes, you are right.

But today while observing Yahoo!, its apparent that the company has lost its focus. First it tried to topple AOL from online portal bussiness, and concentrated on providing goodies and colourful products to end users. It did manage to pull of AOL’s share, but in doing that, it just slipped on the future online trends management.

At that very time Google slowly expanded its image and bussiness from reliable search engine to a trend setter in online bussiness. While Yahoo! limited its ad market solely to US citizens, Google gave a chance to everyone to earn money through Adwords. This move made Yahoo! loose its potential consumers. A very wrong decision.

Definately we will analyse Yahoo! and some of its ‘fiasco’ decisions in much detail sometime later on this blog :-D

I am not so sure about the point about Yahoo failing. It seems to have got back on track in the last few quarters, and about now, seems the only one who can think of matching Google in terms of innovations. Yahoo answers was the first new thing ahead of others, and Yahoo Photo continues to march on.
Google has failed miseably in its IM, as compared to Yahoo and MS.

@Ashish

Yahoo! Answers is certainly one of the best services we have. I just cannot agree more..

But on the other hand, if Yahoo! has got a ‘good’ service called as ‘Yahoo! Photo’, then what about ‘Flickr’? Incidently, more Yahoo! users prefer ‘Flickr’ as compared to Y! Photos. Not only Yahoo!, but also others make use of it. So a question naturally comes to my mind – ‘Whats the need of Yahoo! photos, when Flickr is more usable or vice versa?’

It clearly points that Yahoo! is confused over its some decisions. At this top level, such funny incidents can clearly be termed as a sort of ‘failure’. This is my interpretation of a probable failure. YMMV. :-)

You need to be a serious diehard M$ and Yahoo! fan to say this. :-D
I dont mind Yahoo! IM, but M$…??!!!

We must not forget that Gtalk, Googles IM has been launched just a year ago. We yet have to see the true competition between these softwares.

I find no problems with Gtalk. Not only it allows to chat, but it also allows to share files over the net. Not only that, it also offers ‘libjingle’ and opensource XMPP/Jabber project under linux for free.. :-)

Its not free that matters. It also needs to be convinient. :-D

We must agree that Google Adwords and Adsense technology has got no competition as of today, because nearly 67% * of todays visible sites make use of Google related Technology to monetize their size.

* Wait. It needs some verifications. :-D

I’ve implemented the google search api in my wordpress blog here . Nice. I like.
